The struggle for equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, intersex and queer people in Europa is far from over. Legal discrimination against members of the LGBTIQ-community, a lack of equality and understanding, insufficient protection against hate speech and hate crimes, prejudices and constraints regarding their freedom of assembly and expression still persist. Although the ways of discrimination vary from country to country, the common goal of full equality is not yet achieved – some countries are even moving backwards instead of following a more progressive direction. In Central and Eastern Europe, many states still have a long way to go in order to secure full equality and participation for all their LGBTIQ citizens. Often the policies regarding this topic indicate a broader perspective of these countries’ way of dealing with the principles of a plural and diverse society.
In the light of the conservative and nationalistic backlash in many countries in that area, we want to bring together activists and policy leaders from Central and Eastern Europe and debate ways and strategies towards a more equal and diverse Europe. True to the motto “SOLIDARITY WINS“, we want to discuss how the situation in these countries can be changed for the better? How can Austria use its geographical position as a “bridgebuilder“, help to improve the situation and support local activists? Which responsibilities lie with the European Union and its institutions? And what can the way to real equality in Europe look like?
With this conference the Austrian socialdemocratic LGBTIQ organization SoHo, the vice-president of the SPÖ-group in the Austrian parliament, Andreas Schieder MP, and the Karl-Renner-Institut want to give a platform for discussion and networking ahead of the upcoming EuroPride 2019 in Vienna.
